Pearls of Wisdom

"When you are joyful, be joyful; when you are sad, be sad.  If God has given you a sweet cup, don’t make it bitter; and if He has given you a bitter cup, don’t try and make it sweet; take things as they come."

Clueless

Christian: Nice stems.

Cher: He does dress better than I do, what would I bring to the relationship?

Mel: Do you know what time it is?
Cher: A watch doesn't really go with this outfit, daddy.

Christian: Do you like Billie Holiday?
Cher: I love him.

Cher: Christian said he'd call the next day, but in boy time that meant Thursday.

Travis: I would like to say this. Tardiness is not something you can do on your own. Many, many people contributed to my tardiness. I would like to thank my parents for never giving me a ride to school, the LA city bus driver who took a chance on an unknown kid and last but not least, the wonderful crew from McDonalds who spend hours making those egg McMuffins without which I might never be tardy.

Cher: I feel like such a heifer. I had two bowls of Special K, 3 pieces of turkey bacon, a handful of popcorn, 5 peanut butter M&M's and like 3 pieces of licorice.

Mel: So, what did you do in school today?
Cher: Well, I broke in my purple clogs.

Cher: Daddy, this is my friend Tai.
Mel: [shouts] Get out of my chair!

Mel: You mean to tell me that you argued your way from a C+ to an A-?
Cher: Totally based on my powers of persuasion, you proud?
Mel: Honey, I couldn't be happier than if they were based on real grades.

Cher: I am totally butt crazy in love with Josh.

Josh: Do you have any idea what you're talking about?
Cher: No. Why, does it sound like I do?

8 Things That Make Your Man Know That You Appreciate Him

By Chris J Roberts

There are some relatively simple things that we often take for granted, they have very major effects. For example, do you recall when you said a word of appreciation to your husband, or even your boy friend? There is no need of arguing as to who should make the first move in giving appreciation to the other.

You just go ahead and start appreciating him and you will reap very good results. We tend to think that it's the men who should make us feel appreciated, but we too have the responsibility of appreciating them.

First of all, you should bear in mind that your man won't be happy when you are not happy yourself. In fact, this will make him feel like a loser. He will feel better when you are happy, but he will stop making any effort to make you happy when there is no apparent result. This means that if you would like your man to put more effort in your relationship, then you should appreciate him. He will realize that his energies do not go in vain.

One of the worst things you can do is to belittle your man in front of other people. This is among the most effective ways of discouraging a man. When you discourage him in such a way, he won't try harder to please you as you probably expect. Instead, he will tend to take even the things he used to take care of for granted. As a result, your results will suffer considerably.

It is therefore important for you to know how to appreciate your man. These are some of the things you should take into consideration.

1.) Be enthusiastic when you meet and greet him.
Light up both your faces with a warm smile.

2.) Appreciate him when you are in the company of other people.
Keep anything negative about him to yourself.

3.) Find something that you truly appreciate in him and let him know of it. Avoid flattery but be honest with your appreciation. He will not only feel better but he will also put greater effort in perfecting himself. In addition to polishing the area you have appreciated, he will try to improve other areas as well.

4.) One of the things that people tend to forget as their relationships become more established is to play with each other. Bring back the sparkle by being playful.

5.) In case you have any need, let him know of it clearly without trying to make him feel guilty for not taking that need into consideration. For example, instead of telling him that he never thinks of a given thing just let him know that you would appreciate it if he did it.

6.) When he does the thing you wanted him to do, thank him for it. You should even give him a special treat.

7.) Verbally let him know of your love. Actually saying it will make a big difference.

8.) You will hardly convince your man about many of the things stated above when you do not listen to him. Give him your eye when he shares with you some of the things that mean a lot to him. That is not the time to give advice or make judgments. Just listen and let him know that you are there for him.

These 8 things will make your man know that you appreciate him.

What Is a Philosopher?
By SIMON CRITCHLEY

Socrates introduces the “digression” by making a distinction between the philosopher and the lawyer, or what Benardete nicely renders as the “pettifogger.” The lawyer is compelled to present a case in court and time is of the essence. In Greek legal proceedings, a strictly limited amount of time was allotted for the presentation of cases. Time was measured with a water clock or clepsydra, which literally steals time, as in the Greek kleptes, a thief or embezzler. The pettifogger, the jury, and by implication the whole society, live with the constant pressure of time. The water of time’s flow is constantly threatening to drown them.

By contrast, we might say, the philosopher is the person who has time or who takes time. Theodorus, Socrates’ interlocutor, introduces the “digression” with the words, “Aren’t we at leisure, Socrates?” The latter’s response is interesting. He says, “It appears we are.” As we know, in philosophy appearances can be deceptive. But the basic contrast here is that between the lawyer, who has no time, or for whom time is money, and the philosopher, who takes time. The freedom of the philosopher consists in either moving freely from topic to topic or simply spending years returning to the same topic out of perplexity, fascination and curiosity.

(Can you be both pettifogger and philosopher? Or are they mutually exclusive?)
